For 2011, the route has been reversed for Stage 1 (one week before the race). See Update 6 for details.

Start at the Millpond Recreation Area at 4425'. Locate it the day before, don’t arrive late.

Allow extra time in case you miss the freeway exit for Millpond, in case your coffee hasn’t yet kicked in.

Total elevation gain for Stage 1: 15,465' over 102 miles

Total elevation gain for Stage 2: 13,570' over 65 miles

Not quite as much elevation gain as Day 1, but you’d better have recovered because the climb to Glacier Lodge is a tough way to start the day.

Start at Hwy 168 and Death Valley Road.

Stash your car near Death Valley Rd and Hwy 168, with an ice-cold Mountain Dew in an ice chest. That gulp costs a minute or so, but it sure tastes good, and the caffeine doesn’t hurt either.
